3 Important Things To Do When You Move To A New Home

Blog

If you have recently decided to move to a new home, there are a few important things that you should not forget to do. Many people forget how important certain tasks are, such as changing their mail address, simply because they are too busy moving items from their old home to the new one. It is best to make a list of some of the things you might need to do as soon as you move into the home so that you do not forget.

1. Contact a Locksmith

After purchasing a new home, the sellers likely handed you a set of keys. If you would like to take precautionary measures just in case the sellers have an extra set of keys made, you can always contact a locksmith, like one from Doug's Lock & Key, to have the locks changed. The locksmith can bring new doorknobs and lock sets for both the front and back doors and then install them for you to ensure that they are properly adjusted and working correctly. Once you have new locks, you may feel more comfortable knowing you are the only person who has the keys to your home.

2. Complete a Permanent Change of Address

It is important to make sure you still continue to receive your mail. If you want to make sure it is not going to your old home, you will need to complete a change of address with the United States Postal Service. It is easy to change this information and you can even do it online. Once you have filled out the information required, it may take just a few business days before your mail starts being delivered directly to your new place instead of the old one. If you have a bank account or any open credit cards, make sure to let them know about the address change, too.

3. Unpack Your Bedroom First

It may not be possible for you to unpack all of your belongings in one day, so consider unpacking your bedroom set first. As long as you have your bed setup with blankets and pillows, you can get a good night of sleep so that you feel well-rested the next day when you need to finish unpacking everything you own.

If you are stressing over your move, you may forget to make simple changes that are important after a move. Once you are living in you new place, it is a good idea to contact a locksmith to have the locks changed and make a permanent address change with the United States Postal Service. It may be helpful to unpack your bedroom before any of the other rooms in your home, too.
