If you are constantly misplacing or losing your car keys, you may wonder what action you can take to keep track of them and avoid having to waste precious time looking for them. If so, use one or more of the following four tips to help you keep up with your car keys on a daily basis.
Have a Keyholder Next to Your Home's Exit Door
If you spend most of your time before leaving the house trying to find your car keys, put up a keyholder next to your home's exit door. Then, get into the habit of hanging your keys on them as soon as you get home.
Placing them next to your exit door is an important part of this tip. Not only will this make it easier for you to habitually hang the keys when you walk in the front or garage door, but it also lets you quickly grab them as you leave.
Your keyholder options are limitless. It could be something as simple as hanging a basket in which to put your keys. Or, you could purchase an elaborate organizer with hooks below envelope slots and a corkboard. If you like to make your own crafts, you could even make your own.
Keep Your Keys on a Lanyard
If you do not have enough space near your exit door or do not want something else on your walls, you could also keep your keys on a lanyard. While you are out, keep the keys around your neck instead of putting them in your purse or pocket. This way, you always know where they are located.
When you get home, slide the end of the lanyard over the inside door knob of your exit door. This keeps the keys in one place, and all you have to do to retrieve them is slip the keys off as you open the door.
If you have pets that could run off with your keys if they hang too close to the ground, put a detachable plastic hook in the center of the door. Use this to keep your keys accessible and safe from your mischevious, furry friends.
Give Duplicates to People at Work That You Trust
If you are fearful of losing your keys while at work, have duplicates made of your car keys. Then, give them to one or two people you work with so they can hang on to them. Make sure you choose people who leave at the same time as you to avoid a scheduling conflict.
Having more than one person holding on to a copy of your car keys keeps you from running into a scenario when you misplace your keys and one person called in sick. The odds are in your favor that the second person will be at work that day.
Use Bright Colors to Make the Keys Easier to See
If part of your problem is not being able to easily see your keys or that they look like the set for your significant other's vehicle, use a bright color on them. You can either ask a locksmith to make your car keys from an existing designed template or purchase a cover to place over the end of the keys.
If you are unable to or do not wish to purchase anything colorful for the key, you can also color one side with a permanent marker. However, do not mark the part that goes into the ignition, as the ink could contaminate your car's starter.
